Searching for some great San Francisco jazz clubs? San Francisco is home to a vibrant jazz scene, with many great spots to enjoy live music. Here are some recommendations:
- SFJAZZ: SFJAZZ is my favorite. SF Jazz is a one-of-it’s-kind concert venue dedicated to jazz, which is unique in all of the United States. They present a diverse range of performances by local and international artists. It’s a must-visit for any jazz enthusiast. I have been a member for many years now. They even have a digital membership in which you can virtually view past concerts weekly. The Miner Auditorium is for main acts and the smaller Joe Henderson Lab features more fun and funky artists. SF Jazz also hosts an annual Jazz Festival on Fillmore street, which used to be the main jazz corridor in San Francisco.
- Bird and Beckett Bookstore: This cozy bookstore in the Glen Park neighborhood hosts regular jazz performances on Fridays, often featuring local musicians in an intimate setting. Best of all, it’s BYOB and “free”. For some other great free activities and ideas, check out my other article here. You are encouraged to support the artist and bookstore with a $20 donation.
- Mr. Tipples Recording Studio: Mr. Tipples is a popular spot in downtown known for its live jazz, tiki-esque cocktails, and small plates that they call dim sum. Enjoy a cocktail and some great music in a stylish setting. They generally have music going 4 days a week.
- Bix: Bix is a restaurant and jazz club located in an elegant space in the Financial District/North Beach area. It’s a great place to enjoy live jazz along with fine dining.
- Bar Shiru (Oakland): Not in San Francisco, but Bar Shiru in Oakland is a Japanese hi-fi listening bar. Enjoy cocktails and sake alongside curated music selections on a fantastic sound system that you are actually encouraged to be quiet and listen.
- Keys Jazz: Keys Jazz is a relatively new jazz bar in the North Beach neighborhood, known for its live jazz performances and lively atmosphere. Enjoy classic cocktails and great music in this historic venue.
I haven’t personally been to these venues but they come highly recommended from friends:
- Black Cat: Black Cat is a modern jazz supper club in the Tenderloin neighborhood, offering a mix of live music, craft cocktails, food, and a sophisticated atmosphere. They have music 5 days a week.
- The Dawn Club: The Dawn Club is a hidden gem in downtown San Francisco, offering live jazz performances in a speakeasy-style setting. They do not require reservations but they are encouraged.
- Lakehouse Jazz: Located in Golden Gate Park, the Stow Lake Boathouse often hosts jazz performances weekly, allowing you to enjoy music surrounded by nature. This is hosted by Mellow Sessions and costs $35.
Each of these spots offers a unique jazz experience, so be sure to check their schedules and offerings to find the perfect place for a night of great music. Looking for great date night offerings instead? Head on over here.
